New Works 2009

This series of work is about ceremony, Although serious ceremonies,
they also
bring the community together for uninhibited socialising and am opportunity
to show their skill in song dance and dij which is only represented by certain
members of the familyor clan.
As with the harmony exhibition all works are done predominately with my hands
reflecting the body painting techniques used in ceremony.. These new works
are
more exciting as once the sketch was completed, I would slap and mould the
paint
over the body. This was quite daunting to apply, as a sketch that could take
days and would be destroyed within minutes with the wrong application of paint.
I’ve
also introduced my beloved wallpaper that I’ve collected over the years.
Many of the women and children and even myself wore colorful zipper dresses
that was the standard ware. The wallpaper compliments the sketch perfectly
and gives a contemporary edge to the sketch. I thoroughly enjoyed painting
these portraits as I reminisced to the place I once lived for 2 years and am
eager to return to Arnhem Land in the not so distant future.
