Harmony

The Harmony exhibition was my 1st series
of aboriginal sketches dedicated to the
women and children whom I spent a great deal of time with while living
in east Arnhem Land for 2 years..
These works were done a while after my time there and resurrected once I was
capable and mature enough as an artist to express them in a unique and
intimate way. Sitting in a circle many a time eating crab, sketch book
in tow, we would laugh that one day I would become a famous artist and
a painting of them would be on show in a ’’big balah’ gallery. Ha., it’s
still early days!
The sketches are done on large pieces of oil paper, each figure constructed
mainly with my fingers to give a raw and spontaneous mark to the paper without
being too contrive. This was applied unlike the technique used by the aboriginal
people when applying ceremonial paint. Using this technique leaves no room
for error as unlike charcoal it can’t
be rubbed out and also gives a less sterile approach to the work.V
